How to keep children warm in cold weather
At Muddy Puddles, we're on a mission to connect growing explorers with nature by creating sustainable outdoor clothing that protects them in all weathers while being kinder to our planet. Because we believe that there's no such thing as bad weather — just the wrong kit!
Here at Muddy Puddles HQ, we think rain should never have to stop play. In fact, some of the very best childhood adventures happen when the skies are grey, the puddles are enormous and there's a little bit of mud involved! But as the temperature drops and winter draws closer, it's important to make sure your little adventurers are dressed for the conditions. Keeping children warm and comfortable means they can spend longer outside, explore more of the natural world and enjoy all those wonderful winter adventures.
So, whether you're heading out for a blustery family walk, exploring the woods, splashing through puddles or simply playing in the garden, we've put together our top tips for keeping your children warm, cosy and ready for anything.

1. Start with a toasty baselayer
When it comes to keeping warm, it's all about the layers! A good baselayer is the perfect place to start. Thermal tops and bottoms help trap warmth close to the body while wicking moisture away from the skin, keeping little explorers feeling warm, dry and comfortable as they run, climb and play. They're particularly useful for active children who are likely to work up a sweat while they're outside. A cosy baselayer can help keep them comfortable whether they're building a den in the woods, racing around the park or embarking on a muddy family walk. And the best bit? Once they're back indoors, simply peel off the outer layers and they'll still be lovely and snuggly underneath.
Muddy tip: Think layers rather than one enormous jumper. Several lightweight layers can be added or removed as the temperature changes, making it much easier to keep little explorers comfortable throughout the day.
2. Wrap them up in a warm jacket or coat
A good winter coat is a must-have for any outdoor adventurer. Look for a jacket that's waterproof, breathable and windproof to help protect against the three things winter loves to throw at us: rain, chilly winds and damp weather. A waterproof outer layer helps keep those inevitable showers at bay, while breathable fabrics allow moisture and excess heat to escape when little legs are working hard. Add plenty of warmth and you've got a coat that's ready for everything from the school run to a full day exploring the countryside. The right jacket means there's no need to dash home the moment the clouds appear. Instead, pull up the hood, zip up the coat and carry on exploring! After all, there's always another puddle to jump in.

3. Don't forget waterproof trousers
If there's one piece of kit that can transform a rainy-day adventure, it's a pair of waterproof trousers. They're brilliant for popping over everyday trousers when you're heading out for a family walk, visiting the park or exploring somewhere muddy. They're also easy to roll up and pop into a backpack, making them perfect for those unpredictable days when you aren't quite sure what the weather has planned. And let's face it — children have an uncanny ability to find the wettest patch of ground wherever they go! Waterproof trousers provide an extra layer of protection and mean little explorers can sit, kneel, crawl and splash without worrying about soggy clothes underneath.
Muddy tip: Keep a pair by the front door or tucked into your car. That way, you're always prepared when an unexpected shower arrives.
4. Hats, gloves and cosy neck warmers
Cold fingers and chilly ears can put a serious dampener on outdoor adventures, so don't forget those smaller layers! Little hands can get cold surprisingly quickly, particularly on bitter winter days. A warm pair of gloves or mittens is therefore an absolute essential. Mittens can be particularly handy for younger children, while gloves are great for older explorers who need plenty of finger freedom for climbing, building and investigating. Then there's the humble winter hat. A warm, well-fitting hat is a simple way to help keep your little one feeling cosy when they're outside. Choose something comfortable that they'll actually want to wear — because even the warmest hat isn't much use if it gets left at home! And for those really chilly days, don't forget a toasty neck warmer. They're practical, comfortable and stay securely in place while children are running around and playing, making them perfect for winter adventures.
Whether you're searching for conkers, building snowmen or enjoying a brisk woodland walk, keeping those extremities covered can make all the difference.

5. Keep little toes warm and dry
Cold, wet feet can bring even the most enthusiastic explorer home early! A pair of warm socks teamed with comfortable, waterproof footwear is essential for winter adventures. Wellies are perfect for rainy days, muddy puddles and soggy fields, while a cosy pair of socks helps keep little toes warm inside. When the temperature really drops, a pair of waterproof snow boots with grippy soles can be a brilliant choice. They're designed to help keep feet warm and dry while providing extra traction on slippery, icy or wet surfaces. And don't forget to make sure footwear fits properly. Little feet need enough room to move and for warm socks to fit comfortably without making boots too tight.
The golden rule: layer, layer, layer!
When it comes to winter adventures, there's no need to wait for sunshine. The secret to getting outside comfortably is simply making sure your little explorer is prepared. Start with a warm baselayer, add insulating layers as needed and finish with a waterproof outer layer. Then don't forget the hat, gloves, neck warmer and cosy socks! Most importantly, let them get outside and enjoy themselves.
Because winter is full of wonderful things to discover. Frosty leaves, muddy puddles, crunchy paths, bare trees, wildlife tracks and the first signs of spring are all waiting to be explored. So wrap them up, pull on those wellies and get ready to embrace the great outdoors.
Now, who's ready for a winter adventure?
