5 Creative Ways to Carve a Pumpkin
Halloween is almost here, which means it’s time to get your little monsters ready for some seriously spooky fun! If you’ve already been pumpkin picking and have the perfect pumpkin sitting at home, you might be wondering what to do with it next. Well, grab your carving tools and get ready to get creative!
Pumpkin carving is one of our favourite Halloween traditions. There’s something rather magical about transforming an ordinary pumpkin into a spooky, silly or downright spectacular creation – especially when little hands are involved!
But who says your pumpkin needs to have the same old triangle eyes and toothy grin? From cute and cuddly cats to beautiful polka dots, we’ve found some wonderfully creative ways to give your pumpkin a Halloween makeover.
Whether you’re looking for something simple for little ones to help with, or a design that will really impress the trick-or-treaters, there’s something for everyone.
So, put on your aprons, scoop out those seeds and prepare for a pumpkin-packed half term! Here are our top five creative ways to carve a pumpkin this Halloween. 🎃👻🕷️
1) Owl Pumpkin
Whooo’s ready for a spooktacular pumpkin? A super cute owl design is a lovely alternative to the traditional toothy grin and is sure to look rather magical glowing on your doorstep come Halloween night.
Start by carefully cutting a hole in the bottom of your pumpkin and scooping out all the pulp and seeds. This gives you a nice, clean canvas to work with – and, of course, don't forget to save those pumpkin seeds if you'd like to roast them later!
Now for the fun bit: bringing your owl to life! Using a pencil or washable marker, draw on the big, round eyes, little beak, brows and feathery details. You can keep your design simple and cute, or add lots of little feather shapes for a more detailed woodland owl. Not feeling confident with your drawing skills? No problem! Find an owl template you like, tape it securely onto your pumpkin and use a skewer or another blunt pointed tool to make small holes along the lines of the design. Once you remove the template, you'll be left with a handy dotted outline to follow as you carefully carve. Take your time with the smaller details, especially around those lovely big owl eyes. And remember, pumpkin carving is all about having fun – a wonky feather or slightly wonky beak just gives your owl extra character! Once you've finished, pop a battery-operated tea light inside, turn down the lights and watch your little owl glow. Hoot hoot – Halloween has never looked so cute! 🦉✨
2) Polka Dot Pumpkin
Fancy giving your pumpkin a little bit of Halloween sparkle? Forget scary faces and spooky teeth – this year, why not try something different with an eye-catching polka dot pumpkin?
Start by drawing your polka dot pattern directly onto the pumpkin. You can make your dots all the same size for a neat, classic look, or mix up the sizes to create a fun, playful pattern. Leave plenty of space between each dot so that your holes don't overlap when you're cutting them out. Now for the hole-punching! Using a power drill with different-sized drill bits, carefully create your dots by drilling through the pumpkin skin. This is a job for grown-ups, but little ones can have lots of fun helping to plan the pattern and choosing where the different-sized dots should go.
Once all your dots are in place, give your pumpkin a good clean inside and pop some battery-operated string lights inside. When the sun goes down, the little lights will shine through all those colourful holes, creating a wonderfully warm and magical glow. For an extra-special pumpkin patch display, why not make several pumpkins with different-sized dots and arrange them together? You could even experiment with different patterns – stars, hearts, moons or your very own spooky shapes!
3) Cat Pumpkin
Calling all cat lovers! We absolutely love this cute and crafty cat pumpkin idea. It’s the purr-fect way to give your Halloween display a playful twist – and it’s much more adorable than spooky!
Start by choosing a pumpkin with a nice, round shape and draw your cat design onto the skin using a pencil or washable marker. Think big, expressive eyes, a tiny nose, a cheeky little smile and plenty of chunky whiskers. The bigger and bolder your features, the better they’ll show up once your pumpkin is glowing. Carefully carve along your lines, taking your time around those all-important eyes and whiskers. Now for our favourite part – the ears! Don't throw away those pieces of pumpkin you've cut from around the eyes. Instead, use them to create two pointy cat ears. Cut the pieces into triangular shapes and carefully secure them to the top of your pumpkin using halved cocktail sticks.
Pop a battery-operated tea light or string lights inside and watch your pumpkin kitty come to life as the evening gets darker. Why not give your new feline friend a name and place it on the doorstep to greet your Halloween visitors?
4) Celestial Pumpkin
Ready to take your pumpkin carving out of this world? We love this celestial pumpkin – a magical twist on the traditional Jack-O-Lantern that’s simple enough for little ones to get involved with too.
Start by carefully cutting off the lid of your pumpkin and scooping out all the seeds and stringy pulp inside. This is the perfect job for little helpers! Next, use a pencil or washable marker to draw your pumpkin’s mouth and nose. You could go for a classic spooky grin, a cheeky smile or even a little moon-shaped mouth. Now it’s time for the magical bit! For the eyes, grab some moon- and star-shaped cookie cutters and gently press them into the pumpkin skin. They’ll leave behind a clear outline for you to follow with your pumpkin carving knife. Little ones can choose where the stars and moons should go, creating their very own night-sky design. For an extra sprinkling of stardust, why not add a few more stars across the cheeks or forehead? You could even make a whole constellation of different shapes.
Once your carving is finished, pop a battery-operated light inside and watch those stars twinkle and glow when the sun goes down. Start by carefully cutting a large hole in the bottom of your pumpkin and scooping out all the seeds and stringy pulp. Once your pumpkin is nice and clean inside, it’s time to give it a very hungry Halloween face! Draw your design onto the pumpkin, making sure to include a big, wide mouth – this is going to be the target for your bean bags. You could give your pumpkin enormous eyes, a cheeky grin, a pair of funny eyebrows or even some spooky fangs. The sillier, the better! Carefully carve around your design as always, pumpkin carving with sharp tools should be left to grown-ups, but little ones can have great fun designing their pumpkin face and choosing where their target should go.
Once your pumpkin is ready, place it on the floor or a sturdy surface and let the games begin! Take turns standing a few steps away and see who can get the most bean bags into the pumpkin's mouth. For younger children, move closer to the target; for older children, take a few steps back to make things trickier.
