
10 Activities for August Bank Holiday
Term time is looming and very soon your young Summer adventurers will be returning to school for another academic year. But before they do, you still have the August Bank Holiday to enjoy.
To celebrate, we’ve collected some top outdoor events taking place across the country, hosted by the Wildlife Trust, to inspire you to step outdoors for the last time this Summer.
1) Wonderful Wildlife Weekends at Camley Street Natural Park
Sunday 24th August 2025, 1:00pm - 3:00pm, Camden, London
Join us to explore our ponds and surrounding areas to discover the wildlife that lives at Camley Street Natural Park. Toads, tadpoles, woodlice and worms are just a selection of the animals that you might discover here! Activities will include using nets to look at animals found in the pond and looking under logs to see what minibeasts we can find as well as seasonal craft activities.
2) Brockholes Village Fete at Brockholes Nature Reserve
Saturday 23rd August - Monday 25th August 2025, 10:00am - 4:00pm, Lancashire
Back by popular demand and bigger than ever! This August bank holiday weekend join us at Brockholes for three whole days of village fete fun. This summer celebration will take place in stunning natural surroundings, allow you to start your holidays in style and celebrate the best of British village spirit! There will be games, food, crafts and plenty of nature to explore. Learn more below about what the weekend entails below.
3) Wonderful Wildlife Weekends at Woodberry Wetlands
Sunday 24th August 2025, 1:00pm - 3:00pm, London
Explore Woodberry Wetlands to discover wildlife such as toads, tadpoles, woodlice and worms. This is a wonderful experience for children, teaching them about wildlife and nature and encouraging outdoor physical activity – a great session before their return to school. No booking necessary.
4) Extreme Rockpool Safari at Wembury Marine Centre
Saturday 24th August 2025, 12:00pm - 2:00pm, Devon
Join us on an extremely low tide to explore Wembury’s most amazing rockpools, rarely uncovered by the tide! Suitable for children 7+ and all children must be accompanied by a paying adult. This event will involve walking a good distance over very slippery seaweed covered rocks and in deeper rockpools. Please don't bring nets – we’ll follow the Seashore Code and use our hands and tubs (we'll provide tubs), but don’t forget your wellies/beach shoes!
5) Family Day Pass at The Hive
Saturday 23rd August - Monday 25th August 2025, 10:00am - 2:00pm, Bolton
Based within Bolton’s iconic Moss Bank Park, the Hive offers a unique space, made up of a series of gardens adorned with natural play equipment. Designed with pre-schoolers and the under seven’s in mind, the Hive encourages young people to make lasting connections with nature through creative play. Features such as our mud kitchen, colourful sensory garden, magical willow domes and our water play installation will inspire the imaginations of young minds.
6) Lloyd of the Flies Bug Hunt at Northumberlandia
Saturday 23rd August - Monday 25th August 2025, 10:00am - 3:00pm, Northumberland
Aardman has joined forces with the Royal Entomological Society to create an interactive trail that encourages families to shrink down to fly size, see the world through an insect’s eyes with Lloyd and his friends, and learn all about the brilliant world of minibeasts. Shrink down to insect size and see the world through Lloyd’s eyes with Aardman’s augmented reality app: Lloyd of the Flies AR Bug Hunt.
7) Grange Farm Animal Safari with Cedars Nature Centre, Essex
Saturday 23rd August, 10:00am - 3:15pm, Chigwell, Essex
Who's ready for a WILD day of adventure? Our exciting summer event at Grange Farm, Chigwell, will ensure the whole family has a day to remember! Exciting animal meet and greets from a local zoo, pond dipping, and a trail around the meadows! Begin your session with one of our Wilder Learning Team as you go pond dipping, and discover all the fascinating creatures that call our pond their home. Next, you will be guided down to our private area of woodland, where you and your family will come face-to-face with a range of exotic animals.
8) The Big Attenborough BBQ at Attenborough Nature Reserve, Nottinghamshire
Saturday 23rd August - Monday 25th August 2025, 12:00pm - 7:00pm, Nottinghamshire
Join us this August Bank Holiday for our Big Attenborough BBQ! Set against the stunning backdrop of the nature reserve, enjoy delicious BBQ food with views you can’t beat. All the meat served comes from our very own organic, outdoor grass-fed conservation herd, raised with care as part of our sustainable land management efforts.
9) Gruffalo Quiz Activity Trail at Queenswood Country Park and Arboretum, Herefordshire
Saturday 23rd August - Monday 25th August 2025, 10:00pm - 4:00pm, Leominster, Herefordshire
Complete our fun activity quiz sheets and see the much loved Gruffalo and his friends in the woods, returning to the visitor centre to claim your Gruffalo sticker and small prize.
10) Forest School Family Fun at Lunt Meadows, Merseyside
Sunday 24th August, 2:00pm - 4:00pm, Liverpool
Forest School Family Fun is our new monthly Forest School at Lunt Meadows. Discover, play, be creative and have fun together in our outdoor classroom. Under the guidance of our Forest School leader, we offer the space and freedom to play, explore and connect with the natural environment whilst facilitating fun activities your child may want to join in with, such as nature crafts, scavenger hunts, wood working or scavenger hunts. Our sessions are suitable for children of all ages, who love the outdoors and enjoy nature.
