KS1 Maths - Egg-cellent Times Tables!
Learning Objective: Multiplication and Division
Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers
Resources
Hard boiled eggs x 48 – numbered according to 2, 3, 5, and 10 times table (can be decorated!)
Hide these in areas around the school grounds – in four separate areas
4 x bottom half of dozen egg boxes, 4 with each compartment numbered 1-12, one for 2x, 3x, 5x and 10x tables
ChalkIntroduction
Draw a grid on the playground for the 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables and call out problems from the multiplication tables - nominate four children to fill in the numbers, prompted by the whole class. Ask the children to recite the times tables together outside, adding in different movements for each multiplication table, for example, jumping for 2x table, run on the spot for the 3x table and so on.
Activity
Divide the class in to four groups, giving each group an egg box. Take the whole class to one of the four areas and ask one of the groups to find the numbered eggs and order them correctly into the egg boxes. Repeat this for each of the four areas, ensuring each group has a turn. Then ask each group to hide the eggs again in the same area and swap the groups over. Repeat this until each group has had a turn at finding the eggs for each multiplication table.
Extension
Keeping the children in the four groups, get the children to wash their hands and give each group 2 bowls. Help them to peel the eggs, and mash them with a small knob of butter, ask them to tear some parsley into the bowl with the eggs, and give each child some bread and butter and some of the egg mixture, and enjoy open egg sandwiches! After eating, ask the children to draw the tables on the playground again, this time allowing each group to mark out each of the four multiplication tables, and observe how the activity has helped them to learn their times tables!
