Maths - Multiplication:
- Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables
- Write and calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division using the multiplication tables that they know, including for two-digit numbers times one-digit numbers, using mental and progressing to formal written methods
- Solve problems, including missing number problems, involving multiplication and division.

- 30 ribbon lengths in different colours.
- Pole stood in umbrella stand, baseball/netball pole and stand or tree within school grounds.
Introduction
- May pole dances are traditionally held in May, but are great to use all summer long! - Ask the class to sit in a circle on the playground, or field, or around a tree if using. - Taking turns, go around the circle and ask the children to call out the 3 times table, then call out problems using the 3 times table for the children to answer in turn. - Still sitting in a circle, number the children with the pattern 3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24,27,30, and repeat around the circle so each child has a number. - Ask the children to stand when their number is the answer to the problem – you should have 2 of each number.
Activity
- Tie the 30 ribbons to the pole or tree you are using. Ask the children to help you measure and cut the required length – the ribbon should be 1.5 times the height of where you intend to tie the ribbons. Use a chair or ladder to tie the ribbons to the tree or pole at the required height to create your maypole. - Arrange the ribbons in a circle and ask the children to each take a ribbon. - Model with a partner how to move around the maypole, in a repeating sequence of over and under the other ribbon holder. Recite the 3 times tables from 1 x 3 to 10 x 3, and this time when the child’s number is the answer, they must cross ribbons with the other matching number, for example 3 x 3 = 9, the two children numbered 9 will move around the maypole and cross over and under. - Repeat until the ribbons are all wrapped around the tree!
