Who are Farms for City Children?
Farms for City Children is a charity founded by popular children’s author Michael Morpurgo and his wife Clare (pictured below), which offers urban children the chance to live and work together for a week on a real farm in the countryside. They have 3 working farms in England and Wales, which means over 3,250 children and 400 teachers can come and stay every year, taking part in activities such as apple-picking, foraging and willow-weaving. Farms for City Children’s ethos is very much ‘learning through doing’, giving opportunities to children who may not have visited the countryside before, or know where their food comes from. We went to Nethercott Farm, in Devon (below), to see the benefits of outdoor learning for ourselves. It was a truly inspiring visit, meeting children and teachers from a school in Streatham, and watching them interact with the world around them, the animals on the farm, and each other.
