August is upon us, and the School Holidays are here, so it’s the perfect time to think about firing up the BBQ and inviting your family and friends’ round for some delicious food.
With mouth watering grilling ideas, classic sides and indulgent desserts, we’ve put together our top 5 BBQ recipes that little ones will love – perfect for trying out this weekend.
1) Pineapple and Chicken Skewers
Children of all ages will love these pineapple, bell pepper and chicken skewers, marinated in olive oil, soy sauce and garlic. Serve with cous cous or in a warm pitta. Serves 8.Ingredients:
60ml olive oil
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tbsp soy sauce
650g chicken (breast or thigh), cut into 1 inch pieces
1 pineapple, peeled and chopped into 1 inch pieces
1 green bell pepper
1 red bell pepper
Whisk together the olive oil, garlic and soy sauce in a bowl, add the chicken to the bowl, and mix to coat with the marinade. Marinate in the fridge for 20-30 minutes.
Add the pineapple, peppers and chicken to the skewers, alternating as you go. Tip: try to make sure you have one piece of pineapple against each piece of chicken to keep it moist.
Grill the kebabs on your BBQ, and serve.
2) Halloumi Burgers
These vegetarian halloumi burgers are really simple, tasty and perfect for the whole family. Serve with homemade coleslaw or fries. Serves 4.Ingredients:
250g block halloumi cheese, cut into 8 slices
1 tbsp olive oil
4 brioche buns
4 tbsp hummus
1 large tomato, thinly sliced
4 little gem lettuce leaves
4 tbsp fresh tomato salsa
Brush the halloumi slices with olive oil and grill on the BBQ, 2-3 mins on each side.
Split the brioche buns, lightly toast, and spread hummus on the bottom halves.
Add a tomato slice, then a halloumi slice, then lettuce and salsa to each burger, and top with the other half of the bun.
3) BBQ Hot Dogs
You can’t beat a classic hot dog at a Summer BBQ. Serve with ketchup, American mustard, and plenty of grilled onions, and your guests won’t be disappointed! Serves 4.Ingredients:
4 brioche hot dog buns
4 bratwurst sausages
200g grated cheddar cheese
Ketchup and American mustard to serve
Grill the Bratwurst sausages on the BBQ for around 20 minutes, or until cooked, making sure that you turn halfway through.
Thinly slice the onions and soften in a frying pan with a splash of olive oil.
Slice the brioche buns and lightly toast on the BBQ.
Add the sausages to the buns, top with ketchup and mayo, add a handful of grated cheese and some of the grilled onions.
Sit back and enjoy!
4) Homemade Coleslaw
No BBQ is complete without a delicious, creamy, homemade coleslaw. We love this recipe which uses Greek yoghurt instead of mayonnaise, and children will love helping to wash and slice the cabbage, apple, carrots and onion. Serves 6.Ingredients:
½ white cabbage, shredded
1 apple, grated
2 carrots, cut into matchsticks
½ red onion, finely sliced
100g Greek yoghurt
½ lemon, juiced
2tsp cider vinegar
2tsp Dijon mustard
Mix the cabbage, apple, carrot and onion in a bowl.
In a separate bowl, mix the Greek yoghurt, lemon juice, cider vingegar and Dijon mustard.
Mix everything together, and chill in the fridge until you are ready to eat.
5) BBQ Banoffee Splits
The ultimate BBQ sweet treat, these Banoffee Splits will be a huge hit with children and adults alike. They’re super easy to make, brilliant for getting your little helpers involved, and taste great with vanilla ice cream. Serves 6.Ingredients:
40g butter, softened
50g light soft brown sugar
1/2tsp vanilla extract
6 small ripe bananas, unpeeled
Chocolate buttons, marshmallows and sprinkles, to serve
Combine the butter, sugar and vanilla extract.
Split the inside of each banana with a knife (being careful not to cut all the way through).
Spread a spoonful of the butter mixture into each split, and wrap in foil.
Cook the parcels on the BBQ for 15 minutes.
Carefully unwrap the parcels, sprinkle with chocolate buttons, marshmallows and sprinkles, and serve.
