10 Activities for August Bank Holiday

Term time is looming and very soon your young Summer adventurers will be returning to school for another academic year. But before they do, there is one more long weekend to enjoy.

To celebrate, we’ve collected some top outdoor events taking place across the country, hosted by the Wildlife Trust, to inspire you to step outdoors for the last time this Summer.

1) Wonderful Wildlife Weekends at Camley Street Natural Park

Sunday 27 August 2023, 1:00pm - 4:00pm, London

Explore the ponds and surrounding areas at Camley Street Natural Park, and see if you can spot toads, tadpoles, woodlice and worms! Activities will include using nets to look at animals found in the pond and looking under logs to find minibeasts, as well as seasonal craft activities – it’s the perfect way to kick-start your Bank Holiday weekend! No booking necessary.

2) Woodland Warriors at The Hive

Saturday 26 August 2023, 10:15am - 11:30am, Bolton

Children can become woodland warriors at Moss Bank Park this bank holiday. They will love the opportnity to camo up, explore The Hive and learn some survival skills. They can take part in a foraging trail, have a go at fire striking, and build a woodland den. Finally they will be able to make their very own rain stick to accompany the warrior chant.

3) Wonderful Wildlife Weekends at Woodberry Wetlands

Sunday 27 August 2023, 1:00pm - 3:30pm, London

Explore Woodberry Wetlands to discover wildlife such as toads, tadpoles, woodlice and worms. This is a wonderful experience for children, teaching them about wildlife and nature and encouraging outdoor physical activity – a great session before their return to school. No booking necessary.

4) Bears Beasts and Tales Summer Story Trail at Queenswood Country Park and Arboretum

Saturday 26 - Monday 28 August 2023, 10:00am - 4:00pm, Herefordshire

Join the story bear at Queenswood Country Park & Arboretum, as he guides you around the Summer Story Trail, giving you tips and ideas to help you come up with your very own story. Go to the Visitor Centre to collect your story booklet and pencil, and on completion of the trail go back to collect your wood cookie for decoration. No booking necessary.

5) Pick Your Own Vegetables at Grow Wilder

Saturday 26 - Sunday 27 August 2023, 10:00am - 4:00pm, Bristol

Visit Grow Wilder in Bristol to pick your own fresh seasonal vegetables from the market garden. PYO is a great family activity that helps restore our connection with food, find out where it comes from and learn how to eat more seasonally. You’ll be taking home fresh, locally grown produce free from chemicals and excess packaging. Bags and boxes are available, but please bring your own if you can. No booking necessary.

6) Spurn Safari at Spurn National Nature Reserve

Monday 28 August 2023, 11:00am - 2:00pm, East Yorkshire

Set your sights over the stunning views at the Spurn National Nature Reserve for a special Bank Holiday treat! As arguably one of the most exciting and breathtaking reserves in the area, take a tour around the space and end your summer in the right way.

7) Wild Wings Trail at Northumberlandia

Saturday 26 - Monday 28 August 2023, 10:30am - 3:30pm, Northumberland

See beautiful illustrations by Holly Henry and help support the work of Northumberland Wildlife Trust as you follow your map to discover 12 numbered stops, where you will find fascinating facts about the iconic birds of Northumberland. This is a downloadable self-guided trail - you will be sent a link in your confirmation email, please scroll to the bottom of the email to access the map and information.

8) Wonder of Wildlife Trail at Heysham Nature Reserve

Saturday 26 - Monday 28 August 2023, 10:00am - 5:00pm, Lancashire

Take a walk around Heysham Nature Reserve to find out more about the amazing ways in which the wildlife there has evolved. Once you have booked a free ticket, a quiz sheet and map will be sent to your email address, and you can either print or use it digitally to follow the trail.

9) Osprey Experience at Llyn Brenig

Saturday 26 - Monday 28 August 2023, 10:00am - 5:00pm, Conwy

Visit Llyn Brenig this Bank Holiday weekend, and see if you can spot wild ospreys. There is a live feed to the osprey nest in the visitor centre, and a café which is open daily. You can also see the ospreys from a safe distance at the Osprey Lookout – just follow the signs or ask at the visitor centre for directions. Telescopes are available for your use. There is also a pre-bookable osprey hide 140m from the nest, which must be booked in advance as availability on the day cannot be guaranteed.

10) Wembury Pirate Weekend at Wembury Marine Centre

Saturday 26 - Monday 28 August 2023, 11:00am - 3:00pm, Devon

For a fun Bank Holiday weekend activity, take part in Wembury Marine Centre's Pirate Weekend. Come along dressed in your best pirate outfits, and go on a treasure hunt for the lost treasure of Wembury Cove. Pick up a map and go looking for the clues that will lead you to the treasure at the end of the hunt!
