5 Tips For Getting Children Outdoors In The Winter

The days are getting chilly and it may be tempting to stay indoors. Here at Muddy Puddles, we believe there’s nothing like a fun family day out, whatever the weather.

Here are our top 5 tips for getting children outdoors this winter.

1) The right kit

“There’s no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong kit” could be our anthem! We’re all about choosing the right kit. Make sure your children are dressed properly before sending them outside. Layering is the key to staying warm - start with cosy thermal base layers. Breathable and lightweight, they don’t get sweaty and keep children happy and warm. Then add a toasty, waterproof jacket, a pair of waterproof trousers, protective accessories and finish off with a pair of insulated wellies or snow boots.

2) Involve the whole family

Getting the whole family involved is the best way to show your children that playing outside whatever the weather is great. Wrap up warm and start with a family walk, make snow angels or go sledging together. The most important thing is to change your family’s mindset about the cold weather. See it as an opportunity to spend some quality time together as a family and not as a chore.

3) Fun activities

Try to come up with lots of fun winter activities to make outdoor time as exciting as possible. We’re here to help – have a look at our top 10 things to do in the snow. There are so many brilliant things to do when it’s chilly outside! From an exciting winter scavenger hunt to skiing or even collecting pine cones in a local park, there’s something for everyone. Enjoy different kinds of activities that will keep your children busy and entertained despite the cold weather.

4) Start small

You can set a goal for later but remember to start small. Plan simple activities around your neighbourhood first. Nature walks, a snowball fight (if we’re lucky enough to have some decent snow this year!) or simply playing in the garden are a great way to start. Outdoor time is always valuable, no matter how long you stay outside. As little as one hour spent outdoors every day can benefit your family’s health, improve your mood and give you a good boost of much needed vitamin D.

5) Make the most of the season

Sometimes winter feels like forever and we all get a little tired of these cold days and long, dark evenings. Here at Muddy Puddles HQ we try to celebrate all the lovely seasons and make the most of them. Enjoy these frosty mornings and wet weather walks before they’re gone. Enjoy the great outdoors and beautiful winter nature as often as you can, get active with your outdoorsy gang, discover new winter activities and simply seize the winter months! Remember to wrap warm before you head outside with your family – protect those little hands and heads with toasty accessories and don’t forget about a windproof, cosy jacket. You’re ready to go!
