Captain Cookie is back with a creepy-crawly inspired Halloween edititon! Make a Salt Dye Spiders Web & Creepy Spiders Hat here!
To ensure a truly spooky Halloween next week and to warn off trick-or-treaters, we are making neon spider web pictures and creepy Spider Hats to wear to decorate your home. Now the nights are drawing in, the leaves are falling from the trees, as we pull out hats, scarves and gloves from the back of the cupboard, you know it is Halloween time! The woods are beautiful this time of year, here is Elsie enjoying the rope swing at Forest School and searching the woods for all things crawly and wriggly. Here are two great and easy crafty ideas to add a creepy edge to you Halloween outfit and home.
Salt dye Spiders Web This is a great technique that can be used for any image but looks great as a Halloween Spiders web.
You will need:
- A4 card or thick paper
- PVA glue
- Table salt
- Old highlight pens
- Pipettes or cotton buds
1. Firstly lightly draw in pencil on the card a spider’s web. I used a PVA glue dispenser that had a fine nozzle to avoid big splotches. Start applying the glue by doing the four crossing lines and then go around in a circle joining the lines, starting from the outside into the middle.
2. Sprinkle table salt all over the glue and tap off excess and leave to dry over night.
3. If you have old highlighter pens or felt tips that are nearly dried out you can place the nibs in a small amount of water over night to colour the water or use food colourings. Add a drop of coloured water to the salt and watch as it travels along the salt crystals to create your spooky spiders web.
Creepy Spiders Hat You will need:
- 1 x paper plate
- A4 piece of black card
- Tissue paper in orange/green/black
- Corrugated cardboard
- White card & black marker pen
- Elastic cord
1. Cut 4 intersecting lines across the middle of the paper plate, leaving a solid border around the edge. This makes 8 sections, which you can fold back to stand up like a crown.
2. Decorate the edge of the paper plate with either coloured tissue paper in Halloween colours green, orange & black. Or decorate with felt pens or cut up magazines.
3. Cut lengthwise an A4 piece of black card to make x 8 stripes, fold each stripe in half and turn the ends up as feet. Glue stick to the inside of the 8 sections.
4. Add 8 corrugated cardboard triangles to ends of the feet to give weight and make the legs dance when worn.
5. Draw onto white card two googly eyes and spooky mouth to add the finishing touches to your Halloween spider hat. Staple or tape some elastic to the underside of the plate to secure when worn. Enjoy Halloween from Captain Cookie Crafts!
