10 New Year’s Resolutions for Families

10 New Year’s Resolutions for Families

New Year equals a new start, new opportunities, and New Year's resolutions that are sometimes too ambitious and too difficult to achieve. But they don't have to be!

We have put together a list of 10, brilliantly achievable and realistic New Year's resolutions for families. They will help you bond with your loved ones and feel closer as a family. What is on your list for 2025?

1) Get outdoors more

We wouldn't be Muddy Puddles if we weren't all about getting outside more often. Spending more time outdoors as a family will make you and your little adventurers happier, healthier and more relaxed. It is also a great way to bond with your loved ones. Try to spend at least a few hours outdoors every week and prioritise outdoor activities on the weekends.

2) Enjoy family meals

Cooking and eating together brings family closer and is a great way to spend a fun evening at home. Don't worry about the kitchen getting all messy - the most important thing is to work as a team, make a delicious, homemade meal and enjoy it together. Alternatively, you can organise a winter picnic with homemade treats and lots of hot chocolate.

3) More quality time together

Try to spend more time with your loved ones whenever you can. It sounds easy but squeezing family time into our busy schedules can be challenging. Remember, you don't need to plan any particular activities, just enjoy the moment and connect with your loved ones.

4) Unplug

Pick one technology-free evening and leave all the screens behind. Come up with engaging activities or share a delicious treat. Less screen time means healthier children (and adults), better sleep, more time for getting outdoors (yay!) and more time for what's the most important - your family.

5) Read together

Bring reading together into your bedtime routine. It's a fun and super simple activity. You can even start a family reading challenge with your older children and see who reads the most books in 2022. Reading to children has lots of benefits, from boosting their cognitive development to developing empathy and improving their concentration.

6) Find a new hobby

Find a family hobby or project. It can be anything from hiking together to visiting as many local landmarks as possible. Make sure your new family activity is age-appropriate and not too challenging. A hobby should be fun and relaxing after all.

7) Learn a new skill

Learn something new together. You can be ambitious and try to learn a new language together but it can be also something simple such as baking a cake together or learning to play a new board game. If you have time, you can even take classes together.

8) Hold family meetings

Organise monthly (or weekly) family meetings to discuss important things but don't forget to have some fun together. Play games, ask questions and focus on your children. It's simple - the more time you spend together, the closer you become as a family.

9) Do something good

Volunteer together, help someone in need or even make a bird feeder and feed hungry birds in your garden. Doing something good together as a family will bring you closer and will make you feel inspired and happy.

10) Relax

We're all busy, stressed and always in a rush. If it all feels like too much at times, make self-care your and your family's priority. Don't set New Year's resolutions if you don't feel like it or if it makes you stressed and just take it easy this year. Have a lovely New Year (and don't take New Year's resolutions too seriously - apart from getting outdoors more - we're Muddy Puddles after all!)
