Learning Objectives

Place Value:

- count in steps of 2 and 5 from 0, and in 10s from any number, forward and backward

- identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations, including the number line

- compare and order numbers from 0 up to 100; use <, > and = signs

Resources

Chalk, 30 small sticks approx. 10cm, 3 large sticks approx. 1metre, assortment of loom bands or elastic bands

Cardboard tube ( like wrapping paper inner) and class chair

One large slice from tree trunk or picture of cross section of tree stump.

Introduction

Give each group a metre stick and elastic bands, and ask each group to measure and mark 5 cm intervals up to 100cm.

Ready, Steady, Race!

Take the counting sticks and other resources outside of the classroom.

Explain they are going to race some vehicles using the number lines!

Have a class chair at the start of the line, and hold or stick the long cardboard tube at an incline. Launch 3 vehicles in turn through the tube, marking on the playground in chalk which number the winning vehicle stops at.

After the races are complete, ask the children to measure the finishing point of their car.

Have pre drawn a large number line up to 100 or draw on the playground.

Use the chalk to write down the numbers and names on the number line!

Extension Activity

Revisit the symbols < and > and discuss their meaning. Together, choose the car that travelled the furthest from each group. Using those three numbers, ask the children to decide whether the numbers are less than, or more than each other.
