10 Activities for August Bank Holiday
Term time is looming and very soon your young Summer adventurers will be returning to school for another academic year. But before they do, there is one more long weekend to enjoy.
To celebrate, we’ve collected some top outdoor events taking place across the country, hosted by the Wildlife Trust, to inspire you to step outdoors for the last time this Summer.
1) Family Nature Discovery at Camley Street Natural Park
Monday 26th August 2024, 1:00pm - 3:00pm, London
Join us to explore different habitats and discover the nature that lives at Camley Street Natural Park. Woodlice, spiders, worms and toads are just a selection of the amazing animals that you might find! Activities will include using nets to look at animals found in the pond and looking under logs to see what minibeasts we can find.
2) Xplorer Challenge at Brockholes Nature Reserve
Saturday 24th August - Monday 26th August 2024, 10:00am - 4:00pm, Lancashire
Explore Brockholes, find the markers, complete the challenge and have fun together! Brought to you in partnership with British Orienteering, Xplorer is the perfect outdoor activity to get the whole family outside in the fresh air together! There are certificates for those completing the challenge along with a sweet treat!
3) Wonderful Wildlife Weekends at Woodberry Wetlands
Sunday 25th August 2024, 1:00pm - 3:30pm, London
Explore Woodberry Wetlands to discover wildlife such as toads, tadpoles, woodlice and worms. This is a wonderful experience for children, teaching them about wildlife and nature and encouraging outdoor physical activity – a great session before their return to school. No booking necessary.
4) Fun by the Brook at Blackfriars Rose Garden
Saturday 24th August 2024, 2:00pm - 4:30pm, Herefordshire
Eco activities for children, invertebrate surveys, brook testing demo, tree id quiz, duck races and info stall about the Yazor Brook. Bartonsaham History Group will be there inviting people to share their stories past and present.
5) Incredible Insects Trail at Summer Leys Nature Reserve
Saturday 24th August - Monday 26th August 2024, 10:30am - 4:00pm, Northamptonshire
Are you ready for an adventure? Take part in our 'Incredible Insects' trail at Summer Leys to learn all about some incredible insects and win a prize! Head to the visitor centre during opening hours to pick up your trail sheet before heading on an adventure around the car park meadow to find the answers to our clues and learn all about some incredible insects. Bring your sheet back at the end to claim your prize!
6) Spurn Safari at Spurn National Nature Reserve
Saturday 24th August - Monday 26th August 2024, 11:00am - 2:00pm, East Yorkshire
Set your sights over the stunning views at the Spurn National Nature Reserve for a special Bank Holiday treat! As arguably one of the most exciting and breathtaking reserves in the area, take a tour around the space and end your summer in the right way.
7) Creepy Crawlies and Flying Bugs Trail at Northumberlandia
Saturday 24th - Monday 26th August 2024, 10:00am - 3:00pm, Northumberland
Summertime family fun! Discover fascinating facts all about bugs and creepy crawlies! Download the guide, follow the instructions and enjoy! Follow the map around the Northumberlandia woodland and discover 12 numbered stops, where you will find intriguing and fascinating facts all about beetles, butterflies, spiders and others that are associated with Northumberland.
8) Fairies and Dragons at The Hive
Saturday 24th August 2024, 10:30am - 11:45am, Bolton
Join us for a magical adventure and discover the mysterious Fairies and Dragons that dwell amongst The Hive. Let imaginations run wild in this enchanted adventure. The children will transform into magical fairies with magic wands, then head out into the woods with the Hives’ resident fairy. The group will go in search of the other fairies that live at The Hive. When we find a fairy, we will discover her special mission and together cast a spell to strengthen her power. Together we'll discover the mysteries and the secret dragon that lives among the fairies at The Hive.
9) Brilliant Butterflies Trail at Nene Wetlands
Saturday 24th August - Monday 26th August 2024, 10:00am - 3:30pm, Northamptonshire
Join us for our brilliant butterflies trail this Summer! Pop in to the visitor centre to pick up your trail sheet, and then head off for an exploration around Skew Bridge lake to see if you can spot all ten butterflies and find out their names. Afterwards, head back to the centre to pick up your prize. No booking required.
10) Rockpool Safari at Wembury Marine Centre
Sunday 25th August 2024, 3:00pm - 4:30pm, Devon
Join our Devon Wildlife Trust staff and volunteers for a guided tour of some of the best rockpools in the UK! Our expert team will take you on a guided rockpool safari to meet and learn about some of Wembury's most famous inhabitants, from crabs to starfish and everything in between.
