Forestry England's Magical Room on the Broom Trail

Calling all little witches, woodland explorers and storybook adventurers! There’s a spellbinding new reason to pull on your wellies and head into the woods this year, as Forestry England invites families to discover its brand-new Room on the Broom trail.

Inspired by the much-loved tale of Room on the Broom, this enchanting outdoor adventure brings the story to life among the trees. Expect hands-on activities, curious creatures, forest discoveries and plenty of opportunities for little ones to get stuck in.

It’s the sort of adventure where muddy boots are very much encouraged!

A spellbinding forest adventure

Step into the woodland and join Witch and her trusty friends on a magical journey. But there’s a problem — some very important witchy belongings have gone missing! Along the trail, little explorers can help Witch search for her lost hat, bow and wand. There are special ingredient stickers to collect along the way, too, plus plenty of activities to keep busy hands and curious minds entertained. Every stop has something new to discover, with activities inspired by the Room on the Broom story. Children can enjoy storytelling moments, tackle interactive challenges and learn fascinating facts about the plants, animals and wildlife that call the forest home. Who knows what you might spot while you're busy looking for Witch's belongings? Keep your eyes peeled for birds in the branches, insects beneath the leaves and all sorts of tiny woodland treasures.

Make your own magical wand

No witchy adventure would be complete without a wand! Little spellcasters can create their very own magical wand as part of the trail experience. It’s a lovely way to get creative during your visit — and once your wand is ready, there’s nothing to stop you from practising a few spells of your own. Just be careful what you enchant! The trail encourages children to use their imaginations while exploring the natural world, making it a wonderful mix of storytelling, creativity and outdoor adventure.

Pick up your trail pack

Want to make your forest adventure even more magical? Families can purchase a Room on the Broom trail pack for £4, packed with goodies to help children get into the spirit of the story.

Each pack includes:

  • A themed lanyard to wear on your adventure

  • Magic spell cards

  • Fun stickers to collect

  • A pencil for completing activities

  • A pop-out craft for making your very own witchy wand

The pack gives little explorers something to enjoy throughout the trail, as well as special keepsakes to take home when the adventure is over.

Explore, discover and get a little bit muddy

One of the best things about a forest adventure is that there’s always something unexpected around the corner. Encourage the children to stop, look and listen as they make their way along the trail. Can they hear a bird singing? Find an interesting leaf? Spot a creepy-crawly hiding beneath a log? The Room on the Broom trail is a lovely opportunity to combine a favourite story with real-world exploration. Instead of simply reading about an adventure, children can step into the story themselves, surrounded by towering trees, rustling leaves and all the wonderful sights and sounds of the forest. And, of course, there’s no such thing as a proper woodland adventure without at least a little mud!

Find your nearest Room on the Broom trail

Room on the Broom trails are available at selected Forestry England sites across England, so there are plenty of opportunities to discover some woodland magic. Before you set off, check your nearest participating forest and plan your visit, including the trail details and any practical information you’ll need for the day.

With magical storytelling, hands-on activities, nature discoveries and plenty of opportunities for imaginative play, the Room on the Broom trail is a wonderful excuse to get the family outdoors in 2026. So grab your wellies, gather your little witches and wizards, and get ready to follow the trail. There might just be a little woodland magic waiting for you!
