Must Haves For Family Getaways with Crabtree & Crabtree
We know how important it is to spend time with your family outdoors, and there's no better way to do this than by planning an adventure-filled getaway with your loved ones.
Our friends at Crabtree & Crabtree share our belief that children should spend as much time as possible experiencing nature, and they have an incredible portfolio of self-catering cottages in Northumberland, Yorkshire and the South of Scotland. From splashing through rivers and playing Pooh sticks to rock pooling and racing across open country there are copious adventures to be had in these wild and rugged regions.
We’re delighted to be working with Crabtree & Crabtree to bring you the opportunity to win a £200 voucher to spend on a getaway, AND a £100 voucher to spend on waterproofs for your young explorers at muddypuddles.com. For a chance to win, follow this link and enter your email address using the form at the bottom of the page. Competition closes at 4pm on 28th March, so don't hesitate!
Spring is finally here, and with the Easter holidays, May half term the Summer Holidays just around the corner, now is the perfect time to start planning a getaway with your nearest and dearest. Here at Muddy Puddles, Spring is our favourite time of year - the British countryside really comes to life, daffodils and tulips make an appearance, and birdsong reaches a peak.
To help inspire your next family adventure, we've teamed up with Crabtree & Crabtree to bring you our guide to the best places to stay in Northumberland and the Scottish Borders, the best family activities on hand, and what to pack to make sure that you're prepared for sudden downpours. Drawn from C&C's unique collection of experiences, each activity is exclusively available to C&C guests and showcases the best of the local area.
1) Seashore Safaris (Northumberland)
One of our favourite things about a seaside holiday is the opportunity to have a go at rock pooling with your little ones. With C&C you can take part in a brilliant private seashore safari led by a knowledgeable ranger. Equipped with nets, buckets, and a waterproof guide to the seashore, you'll spot crabs, sea slugs, starfish, shrimps, anemones, and seaweed, discovering interesting facts about these creatures and their habitats along the way.
Where to stay: Wild Chive Lodge, Bamburgh (sleeps 6 & 1 dog)
What to pack: Waterproofs that work. Given the unpredictable nature of British weather, it's wise to come prepared with a waterproof jacket or puddlesuit for any sudden downpours. Our EcoLight Jackets and Puddlesuits offer excellent waterproofing (up to 10,000mm), breathability, and a warm jersey lining to shield against chilly North-Easterly winds.
2) Wildlife Ranger Experience (Scottish Borders)
Invite your family to reconnect with nature as you embark on a half-day adventure with a local wildlife ranger in the picturesque Scottish Borders. Equipped with binoculars, spotting scopes, thermal imaging gear, and their own ranger jumper, your young explorers can explore wooded areas and riverbanks, discovering local wildlife including birds, otters, and roe deer. With conservation at the heart of life as a ranger, your young explorers can participate in community wildlife projects, refilling bird feeders, planting wildflowers, constructing bird boxes, and monitoring birdlife and butterfly populations, fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
Where to stay: The Five Turrets, Selkirk (sleeps 8)
What to pack: A sturdy pair of wellies. Perfect for exploring the woods, countryside, or beach, they're essential for any staycation, regardless of the weather. Our Puddlestomper Wellies come in vibrant prints, with cleated grippy soles, and an extra-tall design to ensure little feet stay cosy and dry. For extra warmth, our Puddleflex Wellies feature a warm fleece lining, faux fur trim and are adjustable with a lace tie.
3) Conservation Treasure Hunt (Berwickshire Coast)
Located on the picturesque sandy bay at Coldingham, this beach treasure hunt is a delightful exploration of the natural wonders found along the shoreline. Guided by a former St Abbs ranger, you and your family will discover feathers, vibrant pebbles, and seaweed during a few hours spent combing the beach. With a focus on the natural colours and textures of marine life, your guide will also educate you about unwanted debris such as plastic and small pieces of washed-up rubbish. As you take part in a mini beach clean-up, you'll learn about its origins and its detrimental effects on the local environment.
Where to stay: Crosslea, Coldingham (sleeps 6+2 & 2 dogs)
What to pack: No beach trip is complete without a paddle in the sea. Our cosy towelling ponchos make sure that little ones stay warm and dry afterwards and come in a range of vibrant prints. Alternatively, our snuggly waterproof robes are a brilliant way to stay warm and dry at the beach, with a recycled 'lambswool' fleece inner and full hood. Fully waterproof they also double up as a brilliant way to keep dry during sudden downpours, guaranteeing warmth and comfort while your children enjoy their beach activities.
